Network Engineer

Overview

Job Title: Network Engineer

About the Role

This role designs, implements, and evolves a highly available global financial network spanning data centres, trading floors, and enterprise sites. You will lead network design and delivery work — new builds, platform refreshes, and third-party service turn-ups — while acting as senior technical escalation for complex network issues. The role suits an engineer with excellent data centre and enterprise network fundamentals, a solid understanding of EVPN and VXLAN on Arista, a strong drive to automate manual processes, and an interest in applying AI tooling creatively to

operational problems.

Key responsibilities

  • Design and implement data centre and enterprise network solutions, including new installations, platform refresh and redesign, and site migrations
  • Deliver network projects end to end: design documentation, build, testing, cutover, and handover to operations
  • Turn up and support services to third parties, including CDN, extranet services, and VPNs
  • Lead routing and switching design and configuration across Juniper, Arista, and Cisco platforms, covering BGP, OSPF, EIGRP, route manipulation, redistribution, and filtering
  • Design, build, and support EVPN/VXLAN data centre fabrics on Arista platforms
  • Act as senior escalation for complex network incidents, contribute to root cause analysis, and drive permanent resolutions
  • Build network automation and tooling (Python, Ansible) to remove manual effort, and apply AI creatively to monitoring, troubleshooting, and operational problems
  • Work with and refine enterprise monitoring solutions so monitoring and alert coverage keeps pace with the estate
  • Maintain infrastructure hygiene through code upgrades, EOL hardware replacement, and network audits
  • Keep design and support documentation accurate for internal and customer support teams
  • Implement BAU changes in accordance with the change management process (break fix, moves, adds, and changes)
  • Mentor junior engineers and analysts, and ensure smooth handover of network issues between regions

Skills / Experience Required

  • Strong routing and switching design and implementation experience across Junos, Arista EOS, and Cisco IOS, including EIGRP, OSPF, and BGP
  • Solid understanding of EVPN and VXLAN, with hands-on design and implementation experience on Arista platforms
  • Excellent data centre and enterprise network fundamentals, from design through implementation and operation
  • Hands-on experience with Palo Alto firewalls and F5 load balancers
  • Strong understanding of Wi-Fi networking principles, including design, installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting
  • Scripting and automation experience (Python, Ansible, or similar) applied to real network problems
  • Resilient under pressure, with a proactive, solutions-focused approach to incident management
  • Good communicator, both written and verbal, with strong time management and prioritisation of workload
  • Curious, creative approach to applying AI tools to improve network operations, monitoring, and troubleshooting

Qualifications

  • Cisco CCNP Routing & Switching
  • JNCIP-Junos certification
  • Wireless foundational certification (required)
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience

Desirable Skills

  • Experience supporting a high-volume, high-availability financial trading environment
  • Experience of low-latency network design or multicast market data
  • Extreme Networks platform experience
  • Exposure to network-as-code, source-controlled network configuration, or CI/CD for network changes
  • Experience with cloud networking or hybrid connectivity (GCP, AWS, Azure)
  • Familiarity with SD-WAN, network segmentation, or zero-trust network models

Systems & Tools

  • Routing and switching: Juniper Junos, Arista EOS, Cisco IOS
  • Security and load balancing: Palo Alto, F5
  • Wireless: Extreme Networks or similar enterprise Wi-Fi platforms
  • Automation and scripting: Python, Ansible, Git
  • Monitoring: enterprise network monitoring and alerting platforms, Grafana, Splunk
  • Service management: ServiceNow, Jira, Confluence
  • AI tools and chatbots such as Claude, ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot
